Ecommerce is a booming industry, but making sales takes a few key things, like a great-looking website. We’re doing our best to make your hunt for the perfect simple, clean design – a must when picking a theme.

Before we dig into our list of winners, however, we’ll walk you through the key features of templates that you need for your ecommerce store. While there are a fair amount of WordPress ecommerce plugins, this post focuses on WooCommerce.

Best WordPress Ecommerce Themes

If you’re not quite sure which platform you’re going to use to build your online shop, check out my WooCommerce vs. Shopify review. You can also read my in-depth WooCommerce review.

What To Look For In WordPress Ecommerce templates

It can be tough to separate the wheat from the chaff where ecommerce themes are concerned. Some look great but don’t deliver where it counts. Others may not look great, but do deliver mobile responsive design and a clean, tight code. Your online store should ideally be both attractive and well-coded. Take a look at what you should avoid in ecommerce themes and the features you need to make sure are present.

What to Avoid When Choosing Your Theme

  • Unclear Feedback (when you add to cart) this is WooCommerce default and it sucks. – Most WordPress themes don’t customize this.
  • Code Bloat – poorly written code can bog down your site’s loading speed
  • Parallax Scrolling
  • Infinite Scroll
  • Sliders – they slow things down and kill conversions
  • Page Builders – a lot of the hosts I’ve talked to say not to use these because they bloat your site and use up a lot of resources. It’s a speed killer.

What To Look For When Reviewing Templates

  • Lets You Preview All Pages In Mobile (so you know what your site looks like to customers)
  • Fast Google Speed Score
  • Quick Mobile Loading
  • Passes Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test

Best WordPress Ecommerce Themes For Speed And UX

There are hundreds of ecommerce themes for online store owners to choose from. We looked at them for you, but only 59% passed Google’s mobile-friendly test.  The top ecommerce website themes we viewed are here, including free and premium themes.

1. Atelier

Atelier Theme

The word “atelier” means an artist’s workshop or studio, but this theme is designed for ecommerce stores of all sizes. More than 671 Google fonts, five header layouts, 41 CSS3 animations, three product page options, and four page layouts make this a very versatile theme. The design feel is elegant and minimalist. Social integration is available. BuddyPress, bbPress, and WooCommerce ready, the theme is also WPML-friendly.

What I love about this theme is the design flexibility, drag-and-drop page builder, and the add-to-cart user experience. There are three options for shopping carts: fill, stroke, or basket. Visitors can switch product layouts with the click of a button – from standard, to list, and grid view. This kind of flexibility ensures users can select the best experience for their needs.

2. Astra

Astra Theme

Astra is one of the best ecommerce WordPress themes on the market today. It’s what EcommerceCEO is built with. The free version is packed with features, but if you want more, you can upgrade to the Pro version with a plugin. Astra is a lightweight, lightning-fast, and highly-customizable theme that works for ecommerce and beyond. Though it is compatible with several page builders, what I really love about it is that you can use the Gutenberg block builder in WordPress, to keep the site lean.

Not only can you customize the way everything looks on a page-by-page basis, but you can also use the Astra Starter Sites plugin to load your choice of 70 designs to make building your site even easier. It’s an ideal option for beginners and pros alike.

3. Ecommerce Fashion

Ecommerce Fashion

The Ecommerce Fashion theme from Cyber Chimps is one of the fastest themes out there built specifically for the fashion niche. It’s super-fast, and with the prebuilt pages, you don’t have to be a WordPress pro to build something people will love. It’s compatible with the most popular plugins like Mailchimp, Contact Form 7, and Yoast. It’s WP multilingual-ready and has more than 700 fonts ready to go. The customization options are virtually endless.

I really like that you can choose between the Elementor page builder and the Gutenberg editor. Page builders like Elementor and WPBakery make it easier for beginners to build page layouts without coding, but they also tend to slow down the entire website. And if you want to use another theme in the future, it has to be compatible with that page builder, or you could end up having to rebuild. Using the Gutenberg editor provides control, too. Because it’s native to WordPress it doesn’t slow things down, and changing themes is easier.

4. Gear

Gear Theme

Clean, modern design with a minimalist feel and plenty of out-of-the-box features, Gear is one of our favorite ecommerce templates. The speed could improve, but in all, this is an attractive and easily customizable theme.

Built specifically for use with the Woocommerce plugin, the most popular ecommerce plugin for WordPress, the minimalist design works well for a variety of online stores. The responsive design ensures the theme looks great across all mobile devices. You can quickly and easily personalize the site to match your brand with your own logo, unlimited colors, and more. The SEO-friendly design makes it easier for you to bring in traffic.

5. Walker

Walker Theme

Walker is one of many WordPress WooCommerce themes built with flexibility in mind. It has 15 homepages, 20+ shop layouts, wishlists, lookbooks, animated product lists, a blog, and more. Though it’s built with fashion and clothing in mind, it can be adapted to a number of niches. It’s ready to support Contact Form 7, WPML, Slider Revolution, and YITH Quick View & Wishlist.

Walker offers unlimited color options, flexible layouts, fully customizable headers, fully customizable footers, and more. It’s retina-ready, mobile-friendly, SEO-friendly, and more. Though it’s designed for a Woocommerce integration, it can also handle any custom code you may need to add.

6. Chic

Chic Genesis Child Theme

Chic offers a slick, modern design and minimalist design that’s responsive across devices. Loading time on desktops can be a little slow with this theme, and mobile is slower than we’d like, but what it lacks in speed it makes up for in style. Chic highlights all the featured images with a zoom hover effect that makes it easy to draw attention.

Because this is a Genesis child theme, for it to work, you must have the Genesis Framework from StudioPress. Chic features extra templates and shortcodes to expand the native Genesis functionality. The theme’s ecommerce features come from WooCommerce, so you can use Chic for websites outside of ecommerce.

7. Karl

Karl

Another Genesis theme from ZigZag Press, Karl is for the highly-visual shop. Like all Genesis themes, it’s SEO-friendly. Translation and localization are easy using included .po and .mo files. The theme is also compatible with all browsers and is mobile-ready. There are six front-page templates you can choose. If you like the style you see in the theme’s demo, you can cop the style from those files.

One thing to note is that the theme doesn’t provide vertical scrolling support. That means all the content is accessed horizontally from left to right, to look at the content on the page. The left sidebar, however, is always visible, so that the user can always access the menu links and sidebar widget from any page.

8. Flatsome

Flatsome Theme

Flatsome is among the best-selling ecommerce themes on ThemeForest, one of the largest theme marketplaces online today. It comes with more than 300 pre-built page designs. With a content library featuring more than 30 modules and a Live Page Builder tool, the possibilities are nearly endless. It includes Flatsome Studio, a free digital library with tons of images, layouts, and sections to import within a few clicks. These include banners, calls to action, logos, price tables, and more. There is also a catalog mode to display products without prices. Users can also add to the cart from the product categories.

Flatsome is optimized for SEO, and gets high scores on the Google Page Speed Insights test. The sliders are touch optimized to provide a quality user experience in mobile devices.

9. Handmade

Handmade Theme

Ideal for Etsy-sellers and others specializing in homemade goods, Handmade captures the artisan feel in 8 stylish homepages. The one-page, seamless homepage design can work as a stand-alone page for your online store or lead to other pages on a larger website. WooCommerce integrated with a three-grid bootstrap system, it’s got more features than you’d expect from a site designed for smaller sellers. The parallax scrolling is a negative, but overall, it’s an attractive theme.

Whether you’re running your own store with artisan items or looking to operate an affiliate marketplace, Handmade is a great option. It’s optimized with HTML5 and designed to be used with a page builder like WP Bakery. If you want to customize even further, the Photoshop files are included with the theme purchase.

10. Neve

Neve Theme Bookshop Template

Neve is a highly customizable multi-purpose theme. There are a variety of pre-made themes that are ready to go once you install it. The screenshot is from the Book Theme, designed for a bookseller. For a multipurpose theme, Neve is among the fastest on the market, a close second to Astra.

When you install the theme and choose the design you want to use, Neve will grab all the other tools you need to make work – including the WooCommerce plugin if you don’t already have it. Neve is translation and RTL (right to left language) ready, SEO-optimized, and built for speed.

Price: $59/year ($189 lifetime) for Personal, $99/year ($299) for Business, or $159/year ($499) for Agency.

11. Crux

Crux Theme

This bold and minimalist theme is retina-ready and responsive across device types. Unlimited sidebars multilingual capabilities and integration with top SEO apps make this attractive theme a solid pick – but speed is a problem. The slider doesn’t help the theme load any faster, either.

I do like that it’s designed to work with the Gutenberg editor so you don’t need an additional page editor to build out your site. The widget-based layout system lets you create custom page layouts with ease, which should continue to work even if you decide to change themes later on. If you build with a certain page builder and then choose a theme that isn’t compatible, you’ll have to rebuild it.

12. Webify

Webify Theme

Webify is an ecommerce WordPress theme that can be easily adapted to suit the needs of any niche. Out of the box, it’s ideal for fashion, apparel, and other accessories. It includes a slider, top bar notification, mega menu, and more. The Shop template shown above is one of more than 50 pre-made website templates.

Max Mega Menu is a mega menu plugin designed to make it easier for you to expand on the traditional navigation menu. Many choices are displayed in a 2D dropdown layout. The navigation choices are structured with typography, layout, and in some cases, icons.

13. Sprinkle Pro

Sprinkle Pro Genesis Child Theme

Where Crux is masculine, Sprinkle Pro is feminine. With this theme, the focus isn’t on ecommerce, but instead, offers a shop feature for those who want it. It does load a little slower than others on this list, but still operates fairly fast considering the sliders. This is a good choice for people who already using the Genesis Framework by StudioPress. If you’re not, you’ll have to purchase it, too, for this theme to work.

What makes this theme unique is the Instagram page template that allows you customize what your Instagram followers see from within your WordPress dashboard. Any required plugins for theme functionality will be installed when you install and activate the theme.

14. Shopitmizer

Shoptimizer Theme

If you’re looking for a theme that’s focused on speed and performance, then you’ll be happy with Shoptimizer. In the past, speed and performance usually meant the design itself was sacrificed, but that’s not the case here. One thing I really like about Shopitmizer is the distraction-free checkout page. With it, you can remove the header, footer, and sidebars, so there’s nothing but the checkout form.

With the focus on speed, your conversion rates are likely to be higher, which means more money in your pocket. Not only this, but the theme also includes many conversion-focused features on product pages, including a countdown timer, stock quantity, trust symbols, the option for customers to request a callback, and the option to display previous sales in a pop up.

15. Hestia

Hestia Theme

Hestia offers a free and a pro version of this theme. You can always start with the free version to see if is something you feel like you’d be able to use, and then upgrade to the pro if you need the additional features. Upgrading to Pro gives you: video backgrounds, sliders, infinite scroll, animations, and more.

The theme works with Elementor and other page builders, but if you need advanced customization, it’s easy to do with Hestia Pro hooks. It’s from the same developer that created Neve, another theme on this list.

While it does provide flexibility with the front page layout, there are not as many header and footer layouts to choose from. There are not as many site demos to explore as you would find with many other options on this list. Compared to other themes like Astra, the color options are also limited.

This is a great one-page theme option, but if you need something more, opt for Neve or Astra.

16. Labomba

LaBomba Theme

One of the most customizable themes we reviewed, Labomba is a responsive and elegant theme designed for WooCommerce. The built-in lookbook makes it a smart pick for fashion retailers. The drag-and-drop builder makes it easy for store owners who don’t code, too. Retina-ready design and full responsiveness across devices are great features – we just wish it was faster. Its loading speed almost kept this theme off our list.

It uses the WPBakery Page Builder tool and offers 21 different layout options for your home page, unlimited color options, and four header options, along with parallax backgrounds and AJAX infinite scroll. While some may enjoy these features, that’s likely hat keeps the theme from loading as quickly.

17. Divi

Divi

Used by more than 330,000 websites, Divi is an extremely popular theme. The strengths of this WooCommerce-ready and responsive theme include the advanced drag and drop editor, premade layouts that are importable and exportable, and the ability to incorporate video backgrounds. Keep in mind that more bells and whistles can slow down the loading speed, but Divi’s clean code largely makes up for the speed loss from extra video, graphic, and scrolling effects.

Divi isn’t just the name of the theme, but it is also the name of the visual page builder the theme is built with. As with other page builders like Elementor, it’s what makes it possible to build beautiful websites without knowing how to code.

Price: $89/year for all Elegant Themes or $249 for a lifetime license to all Elegant Themes

18. Handy

Handy Theme

Handy allows you to display products in featured categories, catalog thumbnails, as featured or special items, and more. Designed for WooCommerce, the theme includes rating and review features and gives you the ability to create your own marketplace where other vendors can also sell. The ideal users for this theme are retailers who make their own products and want a stylish platform to sell them on. WP multilingual ready with a WYSIWYG editor, it’s also easy to set up.

Handy is built with W3C validated HTML5 code that’s friendly for mobile and developers. The theme features a catalog mode and is compatible with Max Mega Menu. Handy makes it easy to develop custom layouts and colors.

Patron Theme

A Genesis-powered theme built for use with WooCommerce, this theme is fully responsive. If you’re a Thesis fan, there’s also a Thesis 2 skin you can use. HTML5 and retina ready, the theme also offers several custom shortcodes and the backend is user-friendly, even for noncoders. One negative is the default slider layout for the homepage.

Genesis users have a variety of theme styles to choose from. Thesis users can chose from unlimited color options and font choices. This theme along with all Themedy themes include a landing page template and the Photoshop theme files.

20. ZellePro

ZellePro

Speed optimized with a live customizer and drag-and-drop builder, ZellePro, formerly known as ZerifPro makes building a site relatively simple. Custom content blocks and movable sections make it easy to tailor the pages to your design desires, but be careful. This WordPress theme offers parallax which, despite being visually appealing, slows the loading speed.

It’s designed for use with WooCommerce. Custom content blocks include: portfolio, address and map, pricing plans, contact form, and more. The theme is translation ready and is compatible with the SiteOrigin page builder.

21. Polaris

Polaris Theme

This WordPress ecommerce theme offers classic, clean design with a chunky, modern feel. Four background styles, multiple image gallery layouts, and an attractive integrated blog with rich snippet previews make this a decent theme. Larger stores may find the options limited, but smaller and mid-size retailers should be pleased with the feature options. Unlike many other WordPress themes, this one was built specifically for ecommerce.

There are five demos, each designed for a specific purpose. Each demo comes with its own color pallet. The style can be changed to any of these: fixed, full-width, boxed solid, or boxed image.

Price: $59

22. Amaryllis

Amaryllis Theme

This WooCommerce theme works with Elementor, Divi, and SiteOrigin Page Builder drag-and-drop editors. Retina ready, speed optimized (although we wouldn’t mind it being faster), and offering a visually stunning design, Amaryllis is a solid theme. It’s also SEO optimized.

You can insert slide shows and custom widgets to display your products. This theme is an ideal choice for physical products and digital products, too. With product filters, it’s easy for customers to find and search for the products they are most interested in. As a general purpose theme, it also works as a gallery and you can use the blog function to keep your customers up to date with your company’s latest news.

Built on the Bootstrap 3 framework by Twitter and touch responsive, it’s a modern theme that gives your customers unbeatable UX. More than 700 Google fonts and incredibly easy to use, it’s a solid theme for most mid-size and large ecommerce stores.

Oxygen supports the YITH WooCommerce Zoom Magnifier plugin so users can easily view products close-up. It also supports two plugins that let users build wishlists.

Jevelin Theme

Jevelin is a versatile theme that can be up and running in a few hours. You can easily start with the demo content that includes high-resolution images, add your content, and make adjustments for your geographical area, and you’ll be ready to go. It’s easy with more than 40 shortcodes, Contact Form 7 integration, and mobile responsive design are key elements of this WooCommerce-ready WordPress theme.

There is an option for parallax, but as you know, we advise against it. Jevelin’s speed is moderate, but it’s a decent theme for mid-size ecommerce shops. It’s also a good choice for daily deal sites, handmade goods, and digital products.

25. Navy

Navy Theme

Clean layouts, a modern feel, and responsive design are Navy’s strong points. This theme is attractive and a good pick for mid-size and larger ecommerce stores. There are a dozen homepage layouts to choose from, along with multiple headers, three layout styles, and more than 80 elements. The drag-n-drop builder is easy-to-use and the theme is WooCommerce ready right out of the box.

By adding WPBakery, Revolution Slider, Essential Grid plugins, that are included with the theme, you can use the drag-and-drop interface to create any number of layout options and work with a variety of prebuilt options. Like many others on this list, Navy is translation-ready and compatible with the WPML plugin.

Price: $59.00 with the option to extend support up to 12 months for an additional $17.63

26. inHype

InHype Theme

Many of the themes on this list are built specifically for use with one of the popular page builders like WP Bakery or Elementor. While these can build flexible sites that are packed with features, the use of these builders often slows down your website as a whole. One of the things I love about InHype is that it’s built for the Gutenberg editor. That means you can use the content editor blocks to customize your site like a pro, without having to rely on another plugin.

There are 11 layouts for article pages. Though this general purpose theme focuses on magazine-type content, there is a shop theme that works well for products. This theme also supports Google AMP, which is built for lightning speed on mobile devices.

27. Proteo

Proteo Theme

Proteo is both a free and Pro WooCommerce theme that’s Gutenberg friendly. Even though you can use the WordPress Block editor to customize the page, and that’s what you should do for the fastest loading site, it also works with the most popular page builders out there.

It’s a sleek, modern, minimal ecommerce theme that makes it possible to sell any kind of item. The advanced frontend customizer makes it possible to edit your theme without any coding knowledge or relying on a page builder. Buttons have gradient support and you can choose page title icons for a bit of extra flair.

30. Blanche

Blanche Theme

Blanche is an elegant, modern theme with the ability to incorporate a video background on the homepage. Four widget locations are incorporated and child themes can be created in a single click. It’s a WooCommerce theme, and light on the extras, but affordably priced and relatively fast.

There’s a social media menu with 28 icons, multiple widgets, and Jetpack support. Other than an ecommerce website, many opt to use it as a portfolio.

31. Beatrix

Beatrix Theme

Built for jewelry, crafts, and toy retailers selling on WooCommerce, Beatrix is a modern and fully-responsive theme. There are four homepage variants, two main fonts, and three main colors. 7 page layouts, social integration, load speed optimization, localization, and built-in shortcodes round out the feature set. It’s built for use with WPBakery.

While I like the look and flexibility of this theme, the only real issue I see is that it claims to be permanently updated. As of this writing in February 2021, the theme demo indicates that the last update for the theme was introduced in May 2019, only to claim “permanently updated” further down the page.

It’s highly-customizable with a number of intuitive theme options. 38.OceanWP

OceanWP Organic Theme

OceanWP is a free theme, but for those who want more freedom and flexibility, there is a Pro version. It includes a variety of pre-made website templates to choose from. Pictured above is the Organic theme, found in the ecommerce template section. As an all-in-one theme, it’s multipurpose, so you don’t have to use it just for your online store. The theme is fully responsive, retina-ready, and has SEO and social media features built-in. It’s quick to load, and supports RTL text.

The ecommerce features are pretty impressive, and there’s a theme options panel designed to improve conversion rate to help you make more sales and money. These features include a floating “add to cart” bar, “quick view” of all products, (allows your visitors to see the details of a product without clicking off the current page) and a native shopping cart popup. Mesmerize is another multipurpose theme with various template options. Pictured above is the eShop template. Like OceanWP there is a free and a Pro version. You can do quite a bit with the free version, but if you need more, can upgrade to the premium version.

For a quick and easy design that isn’t just one of the demo templates, you can use predesigned sections to build your pages in a fraction of the time. All you have to do from there is edit the content inside each section, then customize the layout and design to fit your vision. Pre defined sections include: about, features, content, team and testimonials, counters and portfolio, contact and subscribe forms, blog, and WooCommerce.

What I really like about this one is there a backend demo you can create from the main demo. It lets you see what the WordPress dashboard looks like before you commit to purchasing the theme.

41. Wellness Pro

Wellness Pro Theme

Another Genesis child theme from StudioPress, this niche-based website theme isn’t necessarily something that screams ecommerce, but when done right, it can be fantastic for it. One major plus is that it is a lightweight theme that loads quickly. It is pre-styled for use with WooCommerce so a store will fit in nicely. The parallax effect is part of this theme, though, so be careful.

That said, it doesn’t come with a ton of features and options. If you need something that’s developer-friendly and simple though, you can adjust the niche with a quick change of background images.

Price: $99.95 including the Genesis Framework or $360/year for Genesis Pro, including all StudioPress Genesis child themes.

Choose Your WP Theme Wisely

As you can probably tell from the list above, most of the top WordPress ecommerce themes offer comparable feature sets. Most also work exclusively with WooCommerce, although a few also let you work with bbPress or BuddyPress, too. Speed can help distinguish between themes to an extent, but most will give you control over features that can slow your site down, like Parallax or infinite scrolling and sliders.

You want a theme that delivers the basics, like responsive design, a blog, and scalability that meets your goals. There are dozens of themes that deliver these features. But you also want a theme that matches your aesthetic. How do you want your site to look? How should it feel to site visitors?

Use the list above to narrow down your ecommerce site theme choices to the ones that fit your store size and niche. From there, think about the feel of the site. Play with the demos and put yourself in your customer’s’ shoes. Which themes feel more professional to you? Which offer the flexibility you need? Are there any extra features you can’t live without?

Keep in mind that widgets can make up for what might be missing in function, but that the design you choose is what you’re committing to, unless you want to play with the CSS and HTML5. Choose wisely, and share your decision in the comments. Tell us which theme you went with, and why.
